Ellen Levitt, Licensed Midwife, has had a strong passion for women’s health for many years. She has been involved in midwifery since 1989 and currently practices in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her training consists of a homebirth apprenticeship and clinical training in Kingston, Jamaica and birth centers in Austin, TX and Hollywood, FL. Training apprentices has been a crucial part of her own practice and in passing on the midwifery model of care. Her enthusiasm and dedication to midwifery has led her to be extremely involved in the midwifery community.

Over the years Ellen served as the regional representative on the board of CAM (California Association of Midwives) and on the California Licensing Committee. She currently facilitates a study group for student midwives that focuses on both academic and clinical skills pertinent for a homebirth practice. When not caring for her clients, Ellen enjoys salsa dancing, reading, and spending time with her amazing son, Xander!

Jessica Christen, Apprentice Midwife, began her path to midwifery in 2006. Growing up she was always a nurturer of sorts, using her hands and heart to help friends, family, strangers and even the occasional animal. Always an artist she chose to become a graphic designer, but after 7 years in the advertising field her best friend had a homebirth, opening her eyes to the world of midwifery and holistic care for the first time. After completing Heart & Hands midwifery intensives in 2007, she attended the birth of a dear friend in the hosptial. While being entirely honored to support them, it only further confirmed that the world needed more homebirth midwives. As a student of the National Midwifery Institute she began apprenticing with two homebirth midwives, learning from them and the amazing families they worked with.

In the fall of 2008 she began apprenticing at a busy independent birth center in San Francisco. Always hoping to return to homebirth, she was thrilled to join Wombservice Midwifery in 2011. When she's not pouring over midwifery books she's busy in the kitchen trying new recipes, tending to her vegetable garden, practicing yoga and traveling with her husband Simon. On a recent trip to Nepal and India she undertook a yoga teacher training course and is looking forward to sharing what she learned. Jessica is very passionate about gentle, unhindered birth. She believes that midwives are meant to hold the space for families, offer skills and information when necessary and be witness to an incredible, beautiful miracle.
